The steam bath produces a porous oxide surface, which holds back the cutting fluid:
- Less friction when cutting.
- Less torque fluctuations = reduced risk of cracks developing.
- Reduced heat development.
- Protects against cold welding.
Steam-treated machine taps can be used in the same applications as untreated machine taps, but are especially recommended for materials that generate large chips and have a tendency towards cold welding (e.g. Fe 37).
